Exploiting the South: How the Central Government Systematically Undermines South Indian States

The latest release of tax devolution data by the Union Government, as shown in the attached images, exposes a grave and infuriating injustice against the South Indian states. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala—despite being major contributors to the nation’s economy—are collectively allocated only ₹28,152 crores, while Uttar Pradesh alone is handed a whopping ₹31,962 crores. This glaring disparity is not just unfair; it reeks of deliberate discrimination by the central government against South India.
How can a state like Uttar Pradesh, known for poor governance, rampant corruption, and subpar economic performance, receive more funds than the entire South Indian region combined? The South, known for its disciplined governance, economic productivity, and massive contribution to the national exchequer, is clearly being punished for its success. Karnataka, home to India's Silicon Valley, is allocated a meager ₹6,498 crores, a laughable sum compared to UP. Similarly, Tamil Nadu, with its flourishing industries and consistently high tax contributions, is allotted just ₹7,268 crores. Kerala, known for its outstanding social development metrics, receives an insulting ₹3,430 crores. Why? Because these states dare to perform better?
This pattern of injustice is not new. Time and again, the central government has shown its clear bias, disproportionately favoring the North, especially states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, while sidelining the South. These states, while less productive, are rewarded for being vote banks, while the South is starved of resources that it rightfully deserves. This is a blatant misuse of central power, punishing states that have contributed most to India’s economic growth, while rewarding those that have lagged behind.

The argument that higher population should result in more funds is nothing but a sham, designed to mask the central government's discriminatory policies. Why should South Indian states, which have successfully managed their population, literacy, and health outcomes, be penalized? Why should their tax revenues be siphoned off to states that continue to lag behind in governance and development? It is nothing short of a systemic plundering of the South to fund the inefficiencies of the North.
South India has not only been shortchanged financially, but also culturally and politically. Despite being major contributors to the nation’s GDP, South Indian states have consistently been underrepresented in key decision-making bodies, and their voices have been drowned out by the central government’s fixation on Hindi-speaking regions. Whether it’s the imposition of Hindi, the denial of legitimate economic dues, or the marginalization of regional identities, the central government’s treatment of the South has been nothing but oppressive.

The people of South India have every right to be outraged. The current government’s policies are not just negligent—they are an affront to the principles of federalism. The South does not exist merely to fund the backwardness of the North. It deserves its fair share of resources, recognition, and respect. The central government must stop treating South India as a cash cow, and start acknowledging its contributions to the nation’s success.

It's high time the South rises up against this blatant injustice. We must demand what is rightfully ours and ensure that future tax devolution is based on merit and contribution, not on political expediency. This imbalance must end now.
